MTRS update

Please note: You will receive multiple MTRS 1099-R tax forms for 2019

By January 31, all 1099-R tax statements will be mailed to all individuals who received benefit or refund payments from the MTRS in 2019. The first batches have begun mailing this week.

Every year, some individuals correctly receive more than one 1099-R form, and we have identified you as one of those individuals. You will receive two or more 1099-R forms—each different, and each in a separate envelope—for one or more of the following reasons:

  • you reached age 59-1/2 during the tax year;
  • you receive your own MTRS retirement benefit and a survivor benefit from a former MTRS member;
  • you receive your own MTRS retirement benefit and, as a result of a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO), you also receive a benefit from another MTRS member;
  • you receive an MTRS ordinary disability retirement benefit and you turned age 55 during calendar year 2019;
  • you receive your own survivor or accidental disability retirement benefit, and benefits on behalf of your dependent children (you will receive a 1099-R for your benefit, and one for each dependent child, all reported under your Social Security number);
  • in addition to a benefit payment, you also received a refund payment from the MTRS in 2019; or,
  • you received more than one refund payment, or form of refund payment (e.g., direct payment to you, rollover to a financial institution), from the MTRS in 2019.

If you have any questions, please see how to read your 1099-R form or call our main office at 617-679-6877. We hope this is helpful!
