Charlestown, MA 02129-1628

Hours
Open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

*Please arrive no later than 4:45 p.m. for walk-in services.

Our main office serves active and retired educators who are or were employed in Middlesex, Essex, Norfolk, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, Nantucket and Suffolk counties (in Boston, charter schools only, not Boston public schools).

Since October 2016, our main office has been in Hood Park, the original home of the New England dairy company H.P. Hood and Sons. Our building is conveniently located on the MBTA Orange line, between the Bunker Hill Community College and Sullivan Square stations.

Parking: Free parking (up to 3 hours) is available in the Hood Park parking garage

  • Take a ticket upon entering the garage and make note of your entry time.
  • Enter your ticket in the machine to exit.
  • If your visit is under 3 hours, there is no charge and the gate will open.

Drop-off parking: If you are planning on only dropping off completed applications or other paperwork, there is a driveway in front of the south entrance that is available for short-term parking. If you are planning on parking longer than 10 minutes, please use either visitor or paid parking.

Hood Park south entrance

Accessible parking: The Hood Park lot has accessible parking near the north entrance to the building. There are additional street spaces across Hood Park Drive from the south entrance, between 500 Rutherford Ave and The Harvey.

Building accessibility: Our 2nd floor office is accessible. If you require any specific accessibility accommodations, please let us know in advance so that we can arrange to make your visit as convenient and comfortable as possible.

Nearest T station: Sullivan Station on the Orange line, which is about an 8-minute walk to our office. Exit the station and take Cambridge Street toward Schrafft’s City Center. Cross Cambridge at Spice Street and take Spice to its end at Hood Park Drive. At the intersection you will see a pedestrian access way into the Hood Park lot. The north entrance to 500 Rutherford Avenue is straight across the parking lot. From the north entrance, walk through the lobby, turn right, and then left, down a long hallway to the south lobby. You can then take either the elevator or the stairs to the 2nd floor.

From the North

  1. Take Route 93 South to Exit 20 (Sullivan Square).

  2. At the bottom of the ramp, at the light, turn right onto Cambridge Street and stay in the right lane.

From the West, via Memorial Drive

  1. Follow Memorial Drive, passing the Hyatt Regency Hotel on your left.
  2. Stay left and go under the Massachusetts Avenue bridge.
  3. Continue to the end of Memorial Drive bearing right onto Edwin Land Boulevard. Pass through two intersections, and continue over the Gilmore bridge.

Continue straight ahead, toward Sullivan Square, and right of the underpass. After the underpass, you will be able to see Hood Park on the left; the complex is identifiable by the tall red brick Hood Milk smokestack.
  5. As you head straight, toward Sullivan Square, get in the left of the two lanes. On your left just before you reach the rotary, there is a small turnaround that you can use to make a U-turn and head south on Rutherford Avenue. Take this turnaround, being careful to stop and check for traffic from the right. [Note: If you miss the turnaround, you will come to a rotary. Enter the rotary and go almost full circle to the traffic light. At the light, bear slightly to the right and turn onto Rutherford Avenue.]

Public records requests

Contact

Note to MTRS members: If you are looking for records regarding your own MTRS information—such as your current annuity savings account balance or your estimated years of creditable service—please contact us. Please do not use the sample template below, as your personal data is not public record, and a request from you for your own information is not a “public records request.”

Guidelines regarding requests for public records in the custody of the Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System

The Massachusetts Public Records law M.G.L. c. 66 and c. 4 § 7(26) provides that every person has a right to access public information.

In order to assist members of the public with accessing public records in our custody, the following guidelines are provided:

  • Asking a question does not qualify as a public records request. A public records request seeks “records” that already exist, usually in writing, and/or in one of the formats defined in  M.G.L c. 4 § 7(26). We are not required to create a record in response to a public records request.
  • Whether or not a record is a “public record” depends on a variety of circumstances, some of which may vary by context. If we withhold records or portions of records that are responsive to your request, you may either appeal to the Supervisor of Records following the procedure set forth in 950 CMR 32.00 or seek relief in Superior Court.
  • We will provide the first 4 hours of labor required to respond to your request at no charge. After that we may charge up to $25 per hour for additional labor.
  • For general information about the public records law, or if you wish to appeal our response to your public records request, please contact the Public Records Division of the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office.

Public records maintained by the MTRS include, but are not limited to, records within the following categories:

  1. Annual reports
  2. Notices of regulations proposed under M.G.L c. 30A
  3. Winning bids for public contracts
  4. Agenda and minutes of open meetings
  5. Agency annual budget summary
  6. Other public records of significant interest:
    • Data regarding current MTRS retirees, and agency staff salaries as listed in CThru.

How to make a public records request of the MTRS

  • You can submit a public records request in writing via e-mail, fax, mail, or in person. You may also make a request verbally, in person, but it is preferable that you submit your request in writing to reduce confusion about what information is being sought. The MTRS does not accept public records requests via telephone or voice mail.
  • Requests for public records should be submitted to the MTRS’s Records Access Officer:

Scott Olsen, Director of Communications
500 Rutherford Avenue, Suite 210, Charlestown, MA 02129-1628
Phone: 617-679-6844
Fax: 617-679-1661
E-mail: RAO@trb.state.ma.us

  • Below is a template that you can use to submit a request. Please be as specific as possible when describing the records being requested. If applicable, include relevant date ranges and any other information that may help us identify the records that are being requested.
