A Faith That Does Justice is an interfaith organization that challenges people to experience God by living their faith intentionally in service to others. AFTDJ is an interfaith program; members of all faiths and beliefs are welcome as both students and teachers. AFTDJ is partnering with the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement to provide ESOL classes to newly arrived migrants.
Who are we seeking
A Faith That Does Justice is seeking volunteer Teachers who are committed to helping newly arrived migrants learn English. They will teach students to communicate in English with those they encounter in daily living and to use their acquired language to improve their employment opportunities.
Why teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)?
The ongoing demand for English language classes has been exacerbated by the recent influx of migrants to Massachusetts. As a result, we currently have openings for teachers, and teacher assistant. Help adult learners in vulnerable populations develop the language skills needed to obtain employment and to live successfully in this country.
Course Description
- Two days of 3-hour sessions per week (6 hours per week) — Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00am to 1pm
- Classes run for 15-week sessions, September-January & February-June
- Classes are located in the Roxbury area of Boston
- Approximately 10 students grouped by proficiency levels (Beginner & Intermediate)
- Students are adults
Teacher Commitment and Expectations
- Teach for the entire 15-week cycle
- Adapt provided curriculum to the needs of students
- Be present and prepared for all sessions
- Maintain student attendance records
- Teachers should speak English as a native but do not need to be bilingual as classes are taught in English
