For those of you who don’t know, 826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life. From April through June, many of our regular tutors are preparing for exams or visiting family. But, our students still need support, and that’s where you come in. We invite you to join our community of more than 750 writing coaches, tutors, mentors, storytellers, editors, illustrators, and more!
826 Boston hosts After-School Tutoring at our center in Roxbury for students in grades 1 – 6, Mondays through Thursdays from 4:15 PM – 6:15 PM.
Tutors participate in a fifteen-minute pre-brief with an 826 Boston team member, who will answer any questions and conduct a mini training on a relevant topic. For the first half, tutors will be matched with one or two students who have homework in subject(s) the tutor is comfortable with. For the second half, students are encouraged to work on creative projects, read, continue doing homework, or participate in any other enrichment activities around the space.
We encourage tutors of all backgrounds to apply, and we especially seek volunteers who identify as Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, Latinx, LGBTQ+, and/or multi-lingual so that our volunteers are more representative of the students we serve.
If you are interested, please send an email to volunteer@826boston.org. We will be in touch with next steps.
