On November 19, 2024, the United States House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R. 82, the “Social Security Fairness Act of 2023,” by a vote of 327 to 75. The bill now moves to the United States Senate, which must take action before the current congressional session concludes on January 3, 2025.
If H.R. 82 passes the Senate and is signed into law by the President, it will fully repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) which reduce, or eliminate, Social Security benefits for teachers (and other public employees) in Massachusetts.
The MTRS will continue to monitor the progress of H.R. 82 and provide updates as new information becomes available. For more details and background on the WEP and GPO, please refer to our MTRS News story.
