Horizons for Homeless Children is seeking retired teachers who are interested in making a meaningful difference in the lives of young children and families experiencing homelessness across Massachusetts.
There is a critical statewide need for caring, consistent volunteers to support children ages 0–6 living in family shelter programs. Many of these children are navigating significant stress, transition, and uncertainty. Through Horizons’ Playspace Program, volunteers provide opportunities for play, learning, connection, and emotional support in safe and welcoming environments.
Retired teachers bring an incredible depth of experience, patience, creativity, and understanding of child development. Your skills are especially valuable in helping children build confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills, and experience the joy and stability that come through play and positive relationships with caring adults.
Volunteer opportunities are available in a variety of shelter settings throughout Massachusetts, including family shelters, domestic violence shelters, programs supporting teen parents, and substance use disorder shelters serving families. Volunteers commit to a weekly two-hour shift and receive training, ongoing support, and resources from Horizons for Homeless Children.
