Early on Saturday morning, December 21, the United States Senate voted 76-20 to pass H.R. 82 – the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023. This legislation will fully repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which currently reduce or eliminate Social Security benefits for teachers and other public employees in Massachusetts.
The bill is now on the President’s desk and is expected to be signed into law within days. The MTRS will continue to monitor the progress of H.R. 82 and provide updates and implementation details as they become available.
