Are you considering retirement instead of returning to service this fall?

If you are considering retirement with an effective date of June 30, 2026, and wish to receive retroactive benefit payments, your retirement application must be received on or before August 29, 2026*.

Active MTRS Members have 60 days from their separation date to apply for retirement so that their retirement date can be the same date as their date of separation from service.

Otherwise, according to state law, and as applicable to Inactive MTRS Members, your retirement will take effect 15 days after the MTRS receives your application, and your benefits will not be retroactive to your date of separation from service.

If you are planning to retire later this fall or winter, or anytime in 2027 or beyond, visit our Ready to Retire page for valuable planning resources, including:

*Please note: If you cannot have your school payroll officials complete Part 2 of your application before August 29, 2026, the MTRS will accept Part 1 of your application, received by August 29, 2026, as a placeholder.
